Candy Coated

top: yes style, skirt: american apparel, socks: gap, heels: jesica simpson

I'm not sure how clear I've made it on this blog, but I have a rather large sweet tooth. They say people are mainly made up of water, but in my case I think it must be sugar that runs through my veins. I swear to you I still get as excited about a piece of cake or an ice cream cone today as I did when I was a little kid, and it's nearly impossible for me to resist. I always think "oh, I'll just have a taste", but soon the portion has been devoured and my face ends up looking like the boy on Matilda who is forced to eat the chocolate cake. Once, back in the day when I worked at Chuck E. Cheese's there was eight bags of cotton candy (pink and blue just like my outfit!) that hadn't been sold that day and were going to be thrown out, so the manager offered all of them to me. I'd be lying if I said those weren't all gone in about two days...

So anyways, here I am in rather candy colored outfit. Turns out pink and blue don't only look pretty paired together on a cotton candy stick, but on a human as well. Then I sprinkled in a few polka dots and topped it all off with some pretty white heels, which I feel is honestly the icing on the cake.

In other news, I traveled with a friend to Nashville today to see Wicked for the very first time. I have to say, it was really really great! I didn't know the story beforehand, so I was able to be completely surprised by each turn of events. Needless to say, I hope my roommate is cool with hearing me sing Defying Gravity, as I've already added it to my list of shower songs. Ha! This isn't the song that I've chosen to accompany today's post though. I've actually gone with Kids. Why? Because it sounds happy. That is all.

A Little Bit Rock 'n Roll

flannel: jc penney's, tshirt: music midtown, tights and jacket: forever 21, shorts: thrifted, shoes: asos

Pardon my grunginess today! Even I'm quite amused at the 90's garage band groupie vibes I'm throwing off today. Somewhere between getting a late start to my morning and sticking my bottom lip out about the cold weather making an unexpected return I found myself piling on layers consisting of tights, a t-shirt, and an always cozy flannel. Maybe not my most fashionable moment, but hey. Luckily, I still made time to do my make up so I wouldn't be walking around looking completely like Eddie Vedder. Well, since we are apparently doing a grunge theme today, that may as well be continued in the music choice. I first saw Deap Valley when they opened for an Arctic Monkeys show a few months back. I had been waiting in line for quite a long time to be able to get front row spots for the show and pretty much had the attitude of "ugh, I hope the opening act plays quickly." However, that all changed when Deap Vally actually came out. First, I was impressed by the lead singer's awesome bangs. I have always always always wanted to have cool bangs like those, my hair is just so thin it never quite turns out right. Sigh. (not to mention I was dying over her pairing of a sparkly bustier and cut off denim shorts, so cool!)  Anyways, as they began playing I was so into their west coast rock 'n roll girl power vibes I found myself head banging and yelling to my friend "these girls are great!". Since then I've hit the download button on their music and had numerous "I'm sure the neighbors hate me" jam sessions to it.

Mad Sounds

shirt and shorts: forever 21 +Forever 21 , shoes: charolette russe, glasses: asos

Oh hello spring! I know it's here because the dandelions are beginning to grow again! Some call them weeds, but I still consider them wildflowers.Tomato, tomahto I guess. Whether yellow or fluffy, I love to see them cover the grass!

This outfit is what one of my friends, Andi, would describe as Taylor Swift on the top and Alex Turner on the bottom, which she knows is an absolute compliment to me considering I love them both. It's also fitting considering I did wear these shorts to an Arctic Monkeys concert. They were also my top choice for an Ellie Goulding concert in Atlanta I attended this week with my roommate, Kylie. If you follow me on instagram (@stylishsilhouettes) you know that I also did some shopping while in Atlanta, which led to some new additions in my record collection. Needless to say, I have been playing the air guitar, slinging my hair, and rocking my hips to the sounds of Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, and yet another Jay Z album ever since.

Then somebody comes and hits you with an oh la la laaaa...

Alice

blue shirt: vintage, peterpan collar shirt: forever 21, dress worn as skirt: forever 21 +Forever 21

"Begin at the beginning,"  the king said, very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Lewis Carroll, Alice and Wonderland) Well, alright then, my roommate has recently returned from Disney World, and with her, came some of the prettiest little presents. A stuffed animal Simba for her soon to be born son, picture frames for her room, super hero glasses for her friends, and for me, the Alice in Wonderland cup pictured above. Isn't it cute? I love the teacup shape and the little rose design inside. The little thing has actually inspired this entire outfit. I have decided though, that I really need to make, or purchase a white peter pan collar necklace so that I'm not having to wear this shirt underneath other shirts just to get the same effect, as it ruffles up and makes me look kinda puffy sometimes. But, for this look a peter pan collar felt necessary, so you do what you have to.

"Down, down, down."  - Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Doesn't this girl have a cute voice? I love the mandolin sound too.

Let Me Fall

blouse: forever 21, skirt: target, socks: urban outfitters, shoes: old navy

There's something about a room full of windows, a solitary place where you can stand in the warmth of the sun rays or gaze out at a star filled sky unaffected by the cold wind as you look out collecting your thoughts, or perhaps getting lost in them is more correct. All of my life I've been dreaming through windows, whether it be during class, at home, or as a little kid in the backseat of a car, and I guess today was no different. I have so many dreams, hopes, plans, and thoughts in my head that I often have to take time to reflect on and put back in order, especially when things in life get hectic. I have vision for my life, and getting away for a few minutes helps me to keep that vision in order, and reminds me of what I want to do, who I want to be, and how I plan to get there. This is easiest when I'm in a place where I can think without interruption. Give me an overlooking view, a rooftop, or a big window, then cut out all the ropes and let me fall.

Is it ironic, or am I just reading too much into, but looking back at these pictures I find it interesting that I spent some time dreaming in a peter pan collar blouse, when you know, Peter Pan is one the most classic dreamers, even if he isn't real. Then of course, it's almost impossible for me not to combine lace with blush pink, and add gray socks because just as the warm weather came, it has gone again! Oh well, I know spring will be here soon, and I really can't wait for it.

As for the music today, I've attached Birdy's cover of "Skinny Love". Gosh, she has the most beautiful voice. Normally, when I hear Bon Iver singing this it tugs on my emotions and makes me feel kinda sad (which is its purpose I believe, so well done Bon Iver), but when Birdy sings it, I'm always so wrapped up in the pureness of her voice that it just makes me feel slightly happier if anything (so, well done Birdy, well done).

Pop

skort, shirt, jacket: +Forever 21 Forever 21 , socks: target, boots: asos

I absolutely did not intend for these pictures to be inside today! It's so pretty outside today I took my camera with me when I went out earlier today, set my tripod up, adjusted the angles, the zoom, everything, then sure enough I push the shutter button and it informs me that I had left my memory card at home. Of course, of course. Anyways, I think might be a true statement that I have been wearing outfits like this since 1992. I can definitely remember being about that skort life in elementary school, and turns out I still am, especially in a beautiful pink floral print like this one. Add a black and white striped t-shirt, which judging by the fact that I own three of them is my favorite top to pair with most anything. Plus, florals and stripes are just such a playful combination. They match but they don't, and I think that's the greatness of it. Judging by the youthfulness of this outfit, you can probably guess that my soundtrack for today has been quite similar...and you would be right. Sometimes you need some silly pop music to brighten your day, and no one does it better than good ole JT.

for a day

sweater and shorts: thrifted, socks: urban outfitters, hat and boots: forever 21
Thank you to my friend Andi for snapping these pictures for me! So nice to have a human rather than a tripod for a change!

With the return of music festivals and sunshine comes the return of cut-off Levi's and floppy hats. These of course being the perfect pieces for lying beneath the warmth of the sun and drifting off to the sounds of your favorite songs. Today, I'll probably be keeping Wild Child's "Crazy Bird" on repeat. It has this happy little melody that's impossible to not whistle along with. If it doesn't make you want to get outside and snap walk down the street, I don't know what will.

Oh, and for anyone lucky enough to be going to SXSW, you can catch Wild Child there, performing this song as well I'm sure.

Classic

top: fossil, high wasited jeans: abercrombie & fitch, shoes: old navy

When you think back to something considered timeless, it is usually something fairly simple. I don't mean simple as in boring, I mean simple as in it's all that it needs to be, just by being itself. It doesn't need massive amounts of embellishments or added attention grabbers. The one thing that it does or is, is simple enough to last through generations of people. It can't go "out", because it is what is looked to to determine what is "in". Even when it is called old fashioned, it is done so as a compliment, for people are often looking back at it for inspiration. Just as when I move the tone arm to the left and begin to hear a crackle followed Frank Sinatra's voice, I am going through the same motions that people years before have gone through, and am enjoying the same sounds that they themselves enjoyed . His music, and himself, are timeless, a classic. It is still considered great, and looked back on by many people in today's world. It doesn't need tons of auto tune or dance beats to compete with the music of today. It's simplicity has kept it around, made it an inspiration, and speaks to people today the same way it did when it was first created. This genuine, well done, simplicity is what will make it last for all of the generations to come. And this same trait is what allows a simple top with a simple bottom, simple shoes, and a simple strand of pearls to stay in. While I may have done it in a modern way with jeans and a lacey t-shirt, rather than a modest top with a knee length skirt, it is certainly reminiscent of a vintage silhouette, a classic.
